Red Sox Game Summary (April 5) Coeur de Leon

Sandy Leon provided all the runs needed to win this one in the 12th with a 3 run blast. If anyone is wondering why Sandy is the number one catcher for the Red Sox, perhaps this gives you a clue. This was a classic pitchers’ duel. Boston starter Chris Sale went 7 scoreless innings, giving up just 3 hits and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts. Unfortunately for Boston, Pittsburgh starter Jameson Taillon also had 7 scoreless innings, giving up 5 hits, walking 3 and whiffing 6. But the bullpens were also superb, and so we went to extra innings. This was a masterful performance for pitching and fielding on both sides, as the game continued scoreless until the 12th. In the end, Joe Kelly, who provided 2 innings of shutout, 1 hit pitching, picked up the win. In addition to his walkoff bomb, Say Leon also hit a double in the 3rd, but was thrown out at the plate in a bad base running decision after Dustin Pedroia singled. Jackie Bradley, Jr. went 2-for-4 with a walk, and scored off Sandy’s homer in the 12th. Boston beat Pittsburgh, 3-0 in 12 innings in interleague play at Fenway Park. Record: 2-0. Game: 2/160.
